838,000 employees in in-service training

In 1999, 838,000 employees took part in in-service training, which is 43 per cent of all wage and salary earners. Women were more active participants in in-service training than men were; 44 per cent of women and slightly fewer men, 41 per cent, participated.

The most active participants in in-service training were women aged 35 to 44, of whom more than one half had had training. In addition, almost one half of slightly older women, aged 45 to 54, took part in training. The youngest employees, aged 15 to 24, received the least training, since only every fifth of them were in training.

The employees participating in in-service training received an average of four days of training in 1999. Men were in training five days, on average, and women one day less.

Participation in in-service training continued to increase in the 1980s. The highest number took part in 1989 when 907,000 employees (44 per cent) participated in training. During the 1990s, the proportion of participants has remained at over 40 per cent. The number of participants was at its lowest in 1993 when 684,000 wage and salary earners were in in-service training.
