Nomination of candidates

The elections for the Members of European Parliament will be held in 15 Member States of the European Union between 10 to 13 June 1999. A total of 626 members, 16 of them Finns, will be elected to the Parliament for a five-year period.

In Finland, candidates for the European Parliament Elections can be nominated by registered parties and voter's associations established by people entitled to vote. Parties can form electoral alliances with one another and voter's associations can set up joint lists. Each party or electoral alliance is allowed to nominate no more than 20 candidates and all candidates are nominated nationwide for the whole country.

Eleven parties nominated candidates for the European Parliament Elections, amounting to 140 candidates, 55 of whom are women and 12 members of the present Parliament. The maximum number of candidates allowed by law (20) was nominated by SDP, KOK, LEFT, GREENS and SKP. There are two electoral alliances, the first one between KESK, RKP and SKL and the second one between PS, KIPU and EKA.

No voter's associations were established for nominating candidates in these elections.
