Over EUR 2 billion was spent on environmental protection in 2012
The combined environmental protection expenditure in industry and the public sector amounted to EUR 2.3 billion in 2012. The share of the public sector was nearly EUR 1.5 billion and that of industry was EUR 0.9 billion. These data derive from Statistics Finland's new publication, Environment Statistics Yearbook 2014.
Public sector environmental protection expenditure in 2007 to 2012
In 2012, central government accounted for 54 per cent of the public sector environmental protection expenditure and local government for 46 per cent. Central government's environmental protection expenditure consists mainly of administrative and subsidy expenditure that also include nature conservation expenditure. A majority of the environmental protection expenditure in local government consists of waste water management and waste management expenditure. Of all public sector environmental protection expenditure nearly one-half was spent on sewerage and waste management.
Environmental protection expenditure in industry in 2007 to 2012
The environmental protection investment in industry amounted to EUR 300 million and operating expenditure to EUR 560 million in 2012. Industry invested EUR 136 million in air protection. EUR 84 million was invested in water protection, EUR 68 million in waste management and soil and groundwater protection, and EUR 15 million in other environmental protection. Environmental investments formed seven per cent of fixed investments in industry.
Industry spent 90 per cent of the operating expenditure of environment protection on the running and maintenance expenditure of environmental protection equipment and constructions.

The Environment Statistics Yearbook published annually by Statistics Finland contains statistical data on several themes related to our living environment.
The topics covered in the publication include greenhouse gas emissions and other emissions into air, burdening and condition of waters, waste, forests, biological diversity, material requirement, energy consumption, transport, environmental taxation, environmental protection expenditure, and environmental goods and services. For most topics, there are also comparison data from other EU countries.
