Time use is changing
Finns are spending more and more of their free time with computers. At the same time, being alone has increased. The conference of the International Association for Time Use Research IATUR 2014 will discuss, for example, how the tools of Time Use Surveys can be used to analyse recent changes in everyday life.
"The challenge of Time Use Surveys is often how to utilise new data collection methods in statistics production. An increasing number of people are, for example, using their smart phones to track their exercise and sleep habits, which are also traditional areas of Time Use Surveys," says Senior Researcher Hannu Pääkkönen from Statistics Finland, who is one of the speakers at the conference.
The 36th conference of the International Association for Time Use Research, IATUR will be arranged in Turku, Finland between 30 July and 1 August 2014. The aim of the conference is to stimulate the discussion on the multifaceted relationships between theory and practice in time use research.
Statistics Finland is one of the organisers of the conference
In addition to IATUR, Åbo Akademi University, University of Turku, Statistics Finland, and the Social Insurance Institution of Finland act as the organisers of the conference. Prior to the conference, Statistics Finland and the National Consumer Research Centre organised a workshop "Measuring household production", where measuring and monetary valuation of unpaid work made in households was studied.
The IATUR conference is arranged annually and attendees include experts from universities, statistical agencies and research institutes from all over the world. The conference has been arranged in Finland once before 30 years ago in 1984.
