The release calendar for 2014 is now available. Take a look at the
new calendar where you can find information on statistics and
publications that will be released next year. The calendar has new
functionalities including various defining possibilities.

December 2013 Balance of payments statistics will be
transferred to Statistics Finland at the turn of the year
In summer 2013, the Bank of Finland and Statistics Finland signed
an agreement to transfer the balance of payment statistics from the
Bank of Finland to Statistics Finland. The transfer is part of the
central government's effectiveness and profitability project, where
one objective is to centralise statistics production to Statistics
Finland.

Economic and Environmental Statistics Department
Leena Storgårds has been appointed Director of Statistics Finland's
Economic and Environmental Statistics Department for the five-year
term 1 December 2013 to 30 November 2018.

competition
The winners of the Apps4Finland 2013 competition have been
selected. The Apps4Finland 2013 competition sought best innovations
that make use of Finnish open data. Statistics Finland participated
in the competition as a partner for the second time.

8 October 2013 Basic skills of Finnish adults
among the best in the OECD countries
According to the Programme for the International Assessment of
Adult Competencies (PIAAC), the average literacy and numeracy
skills of Finnish adults are excellent by international comparison.
In Finland, the data collection for the survey was done by
Statistics Finland.

series
Statistics Finland has started a new Working Papers publication
series. The series comprises surveys, studies and reports related
to statistics compilation and quality, concepts and methods of
statistics.

September 2013 New information is collected concerning
employees' working conditions
Statistics Finland launched the seventh nationwide study concerning
employees' working conditions at the beginning of September. By the
end of the year, nearly 5,000 persons will be interviewed in the
Quality of Work Life Survey 2013.

The Environment web service contains statistical data on the
interaction between nature and people from various perspectives and
information on the measures taken by society to protect nature.

September 2013 Statistics Finland will close down its
local offices during 2014
Statistics Finland's local offices in Seinäjoki, Tampere, Turku and
Oulu will close down by the end of 2014.

The team representing Finland from Lyseonpuisto Upper Secondary
School, Rovaniemi has won for the third successive time the upper
secondary school category in the International Statistical Literacy

Ms Riitta Eiskonen, Master of Arts, has been appointed Director of
IT Services at Statistics Finland for the five-year term starting
on 1 October 2013.

2013 Reviews to National Accounts in 2014
In September 2014, EU Member States will implement the revised
European System of National and Regional Accounts, ESA 2010. As a
result of the revision, the system of national accounts will
describe the economic environment better than at present and
respond to the new information needs of data users.

people
Statistics Finland studies self-employed people for the first time.
The purpose of the survey to be started at the end of August is to
collect data on the situation and working conditions of sole
entrepreneurs, self-employed persons, freelance workers and persons
working on a grant.

July 2013 Number of farmed fur animals has decreased by
more than one-half
The number of farmed fur animals has decreased by more than
one-half since 1985. While there were 8.2 million farmed fur
animals in 1985, in 2012 there were only 3.6 million. These data
derive from Statistics Finland's new publication, Environment
Statistics Yearbook 2013.

Mr Timo Koskimäki has been appointed Deputy Director General of
Statistics Production at Statistics Finland for the five-year term
starting on 1 September 2013.

June 2013 Production of balance of payments statistics
to be transferred from Bank of Finland to Statistics Finland
Today, on 26 June 2013, the Bank of Finland
and Statistics Finland signed an agreement on transferring the
production of balance of payments statistics from the Bank of
Finland to Statistics Finland. The main responsibility for
compiling balance of payments statistics and the related tasks will
be taken over by Statistics Finland from the beginning of 2014.

2013 Women with foreign background become mothers
younger
Women with foreign background gave birth to 7.1 per cent of the
children born in Finland between 2007 and 2011. Women with foreign
background are slightly younger when giving birth than Finnish-born
women are.

size
Statistics Finland's newly published Finland in Figures is a
compact, 40-page information package in pocket size about Finland
and its people. The booklet contains key data on various economic
and social topics as statistics and graphs. It also includes
international comparison data.

June 2013 Amendments to the Statistics Act
The act on the amendment of the Statistics Act was approved on 24
May 2013. The amendment to the legislation will extend the
processing of the data collected for statistical purposes in
scientific studies and statistical analyses on social conditions,
for example.

Due to technical problems with statistical releases, for instance
the links to the database tables are not working. We will fix the

Partnership Group
Statistics Finland's Director General Marjo Bruun has been selected
as member of the Partnership Group of the European Statistical
System ESS for the term between 1 September 2013 and 30 June

amendments
Statistics Finland has published a model that simulates Finland's
personal taxation and social security system for calculating the
economic effects of legislative changes.

The Eino H. Laurila national income medal for 2012 has been awarded
to Jukka Pekkarinen and Heli Jeskanen-Sundström. The medals are

census
Statistical stories about Finns have been published in English on
the thematic pages on population census. The data of the stories
can be reviewed, for instance, as map animations, diagrams, charts,
time series or tables.

25 February 2013 National accounts data will
be released at 10 am on 1 March 2013
Statistics Finland will release preliminary national accounts data
on economic development in 2012 at a press conference starting at
10 am on 1 March 2013. At the same time, statistics will also be
released on general government deficit and debt, quarterly national
accounts, and taxes and tax-like payments.

February 2013 Calculation of the Consumer Price Index is
revised
Statistics Finland has made revisions to the calculation methods of
the Consumer Price Index. In future, the weight structure of the
Index is updated annually, which means that the monitored
commodities can also be updated annually.

economy
Statistics Finland has published time series on the development of
the Finnish economy in its databases. The longest time series cover
more than 150 years.

January 2013 Changes to statistics on housing
prices
Statistics Finland is renewing its statistics on housing prices in
2013. Statistics Finland will start publishing new statistics on
the index of owner-occupied housing prices.

renewed
Statistics Finland has renewed the search function on its website.
The new function makes the finding of data significantly easier: it
allows data to be searched with more precision than before from
tables, databases, articles and diverse metadata.
