Amount of produced biogas decreased by 2 per cent in 2023

release | Energy supply and consumption 2023

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the production of biogas totalled 3,310 terajoules (TJ). Of this amount 2,940 TJ was consumed and the remaining 370 TJ (11%) was flared. The amount of biogas delivered from production plants to consumption declined by one per cent compared to the previous year. The production volume of biogas decreased by 10 per cent on landfill collection sites and by six per cent in wastewater treatment plants. The amount produced by on-farm agricultural waste facilities increased by 31 per cent.

Key selections

  • Over one half (56 %) of the biogas was produced in co-processing plants, where the production remained on level with 2022. Co-processing plants disposed of 15 per cent less surplus biogas than in the previous year.
  • The total amount of flared biogas decreased by seven per cent. Flaring declined most in biogas plants connected to wastewater treatment plants.
  • Flaring of biogas collected from landfill sites increased by 17 per cent.
  • The share of on-farm agricultural waste facilities in all biogas produced was five per cent.
  • Of all biogas produced in 2023, altogether 11 per cent was flared (12 per cent in 2022).
