Description

Parliamentary elections are held in Finland every four years. Statistics Finland produces official statistics from the elections. The preliminary statistics are published on the Internet, in the StatFin online service and on the statistics pages on Parliamentary elections as soon as possible starting from the election night. The second data, or the final data are supplied to Statistics Finland after the election result is confirmed. After the confirmation of the election result, the confirmed data corresponding to the preliminary statistics are released on the statistics pages on the Internet and the StatFin databases are updated.

Detailed data on parliamentary elections since 1995 can be found on Statistics Finland’s website on the specific page designated for them in the list of statistics by topic, and on elections since 1983 in the StatFin online service.

Statistics Finland receives the basic data for the elections from the Ministry of Justice’s election information system, the technical implementation of which it has assigned to Tieto Group. Statistics Finland’s election data system comprises four election data files: regional file, party file, candidate file and candidate register.

Data content

The main content includes: the numbers and proportions of votes cast for the parties by municipality separated into votes cast in advance voting and on the actual election day, numbers and proportions of votes cast for female candidates by party and constituency, numbers of those entitled to vote and those who voted by sex and municipality both in advance voting and on the actual election day, numbers of candidates and elected MPs by party and sex, and numbers of votes cast for all candidates and comparative figures by constituency. Statistics Finland’s election data system consists of four election files: area file, party file, candidate file and candidate register. From 2003 onwards data are also available by voting district in Statistics Finland’s StatFin online service.
