Description

The statistics on building and dwelling production describe the volume of construction subject to building permits and the volume of production. The statistics describe domestic building production from the viewpoint of the end product. The volume is measured in the statistics with the cubic capacity and number of dwellings of building projects. The volume index of newbuilding describes changes in the value at constant prices of newbuilding in domestic building construction from the comparison period or the base year of the index. The statistics do not extend to conversions and renovations requiring building permits.

Data content

The statistics on building and dwelling production contain data on granted building permits, started and completed buildings and buildings under construction, number of dwellings and the series of the volume index of newbuilding. In the statistics on building and dwelling production, the volume unit is the number of buildings, cubic volume, gross floor area, total area, number of dwellings and volume of production. The volume index series, cubic volume data on building production and number of dwellings are published by type of building.

Data can be ordered as chargeable assignments by type of building and area on different features of the building. The price is dependent on the extent of the data.

Classifications used

The main classification by which the statistics are produced is the Classification of buildings, and the regional division used in their publication is the whole country. Data are also available by sub-regional unit and municipality.

Data collection methods and data sources

In Finland all new building construction is subject to building permits. Municipal building supervision authorities follow and collect information about the building project and its progress. The statistics on building and dwelling production are based on the notifications submitted by municipal building supervision authorities to the Population Register Centre about building projects subject to building permits and their building stages.

Updating frequency

Building permits granted, started and completed buildings, and the volume index of newbuilding are published monthly.

Time of completion or release

The release delay about eight weeks.

Time series

Data starting from 1952. With the present classification of buildings since 1988. For the volume index of newbuilding time series 1990=100, 1995=100, 2000=100 and 2005=100.
