Description
The index of new orders in manufacturing describes development in the value of new orders received by enterprises for the commodities and services that are meant to be produced by establishments located in Finland.
The task of the index of new orders in manufacturing is to provide rapid and reliable information about the development of new orders. In addition, the compiled statistics indicate how production and turnover are likely to change in future. Calculation of the index is based on the estimation of change. Sums by industry are calculated with data on the enterprises for which comparable data are available for both the examined month and the corresponding month of the previous year. The obtained sums are used to calculate annual changes by industry. The calculation of annual changes also allows for the restructuring of enterprises and for changes of industry. These annual changes are used to raise the index of new orders from the corresponding month of the year before. Indices for aggregated levels of classification are obtained by weighting the indices of new orders at the two-digit level. Estimates of the values of the entire population’s new orders at the two-digit level are used as the weights. The latest index figures for the past 12 months can become revised as new data become available and enterprises correct the information already given. The statistics and indices compiled from the data are public under the condition that no individual enterprise’s data can be identified from them.

Data collection methods and data sources
The statistics on new orders in manufacturing are based on judicious sampling. The annual sample comprises approximately 400 to 430 enterprises or their establishments, which together account for around 70 to 75 per cent of the turnover of the industries concerned. The sample is reviewed annually and the most significant new enterprises are added to it. The enterprises included in the sample are sent a monthly questionnaire to inquire primarily about the value of new orders they have received during the month that are meant to be produced by establishments located in Finland. Alternatively, the enterprises can report the value of their order stock at the end of the month together with the values of orders cancelled and delivered during the month. Statistics Finland can use this information to calculate the value of new orders received during the month. To improve purity by industry, enterprises operating in multiple industries are divided into industry-specific units. Data obtained with Statistics Finland’s survey of large enterprises and basic information on enterprises, such as that on their industry contained in the Register of Enterprises and Establishments, are also exploited in the data collection.
