The number of higher polytechnic degrees continued growing

According to Statistics Finland's Education Statistics, 25,000 degrees were completed at polytechnics in 2014, which was close on one per cent more than in the previous year. A total of 22,900 polytechnic degrees were completed, 18,700 in youth education and 4,200 in adult education. Altogether 2,100 higher polytechnic degrees were attained, which was almost nine per cent more than in the year before.

Completed polytechnic degrees by gender from 2006 to 2014

Women completed more than 60 per cent of all degrees in polytechnic education. Most degrees, 33 per cent, were completed in the fields of welfare, health and sport, and 88 per cent of these were completed by women. The second most degrees were completed in the technology and transport sector, 23 per cent. Of these degrees, four out of five were completed by men. The third most degrees were completed in the fields of social sciences, business economics and administration, 21 per cent.

Most higher polytechnic degrees were completed in the field of health, welfare and sports, 36 per cent, and second most in the field of social sciences, business and administration, 26 per cent. Women completed 68 per cent of all higher polytechnic degrees.

In 2014, the median time for completing a polytechnic degree was four years. In polytechnic education directed at young people, the fields of welfare, health and sport had the fastest completion times, three-and-a-half years. The longest completion times in polytechnic education directed at young people were found among students in the technology sector, five years. The medians have been calculated from gross study times, so the study times also include terms of absence. In addition, studying may have been part-time. The study times were calculated at an accuracy of one month.

The highest number of degrees was attained at Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, 2,660 and the lowest at the Police University College, 35.
