Number of enterprise openings up on the year before - number of closures also on the increase

The growth in the number of enterprise openings continued and amounted to nearly seven per cent in the third quarter of 2007. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in real estate and business activities, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the Region of Uusimaa. The number of enterprise closures also grew in the second quarter of 2007, by almost six per cent from the corresponding quarter of the year before. The highest numbers of enterprise closures were also recorded in real estate and business activities and in the Region of Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,609 enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2007. Enterprise openings increased by 6.7 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2006 when they numbered 7,131. Enterprise openings made up 2.6 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2007.

The number of enterprise openings was highest in real estate and business activities where they totalled 2,238, or 29.4 per cent of all enterprise openings in the third quarter. In construction, enterprise openings numbered 1,492 (19.6%) and in trade 1,286 (16.9%).

Examined by region and relative to the size of enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the Region of Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,610, or 3.0 per cent of the total enterprise stock. In the Regions of Pirkanmaa and Kanta-Häme, enterprise openings made up 2.8 per cent of the total stock of enterprises.

Examined by municipality, Helsinki (1,370), Espoo (379), Tampere (353) and Turku (270) had the highest numbers of enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2007. Compared to the third quarter of 2006, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (215) and decreased most, or by 12, in Pietarsaari and Siilinjärvi.

Enterprise closures, 2nd quarter of 2007

According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,680 enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2007. Compared to the second quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 5.7 per cent, as in the second quarter of 2006 they numbered 4,429. Enterprise closures made up 1.6 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2007.

The number of enterprise closures was highest in real estate and business activities where they totalled 1,189 (25.4%). In trade, enterprise closures numbered 1,085 (23.2%) and in construction 698 (14.9%).

Examined by region, in the second quarter of 2007 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the Region of Uusimaa where they totalled 1,451. Relative to the size of enterprise stock, the share of enterprise closures was highest in the Regions of Kanta-Häme and Central Finland, at 1.9 per cent in both.

Examined by municipality, Helsinki (728), Espoo (212) and Tampere (205) had the highest numbers of enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2007. Compared to the second quarter of 2006, enterprise closures increased most in Turku (30) and decreased most in Hyvinkää and Mäntsälä (16).
