Number of enterprise openings turned to decline - number of closures continues to rise

The number of enterprise openings fell by almost three per cent in the last quarter of 2007. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in real estate and business activities, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in the Region of Uusimaa. The number of enterprise closures continued to rise in the third quarter of 2007, by almost four per cent from the corresponding quarter of the year before. The highest numbers of enterprise closures were also recorded in real estate and business activities and in the Region of Uusimaa. Examined by legal form, there were 10 per cent fewer openings of enterprises of the corporate form of natural person and seven per cent more openings of enterprises of the corporate form of limited company than in the respective time period of the previous year.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,057 enterprise openings in the last quarter of 2007. Enterprise openings decreased by 2.6 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2006 when they numbered 7,247. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the last quarter of 2007.

The number of enterprise openings was highest in real estate and business activities where they totalled 2,136, or 30.3 per cent of all enterprise openings in the last quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 1,296 (18.4%) and in construction 1,224 (17.3%).

Examined by region and relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the Region of Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,518, or 2.9 per cent of the total enterprise stock.

Examined by municipality, Helsinki (1,378), Espoo (326), Tampere (288) and Turku (258) had the highest numbers of enterprise openings in the last quarter of 2007. Compared to the last quarter of 2006, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (47) and decreased most in Espoo (-94).

Enterprise closures, 3rd quarter of 2007

According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,378 enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2007. Compared to the third quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 3.6 per cent, as in the third quarter of 2006 they numbered 4,227. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.5 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2007.

The number of enterprise closures was highest in real estate and business activities where they totalled 1,134 (25.9%). In trade, enterprise closures numbered 1,051 (24.0%) and in construction 658 (15.0%).

Examined by region and relative to the enterprise stock, in the third quarter of 2007 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the Region of Uusimaa where they totalled 1,498, or 1.7 per cent of the total enterprise stock.

Examined by municipality, Helsinki (749), Espoo (227) and Tampere (196) had the highest numbers of enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2007. Compared to the third quarter of 2006, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (32) and Espoo (27) and decreased most in Vantaa (-17) and Jyväskylä (-13).
