Number of enterprise closures increased by nearly 13 per cent
The number of enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2008 was 0.1 per cent lower than one year previously. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in real estate and business activities, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in Uusimaa. The number of enterprise closures increased in the second quarter of 2008 by nearly 13 per cent from the respective period of the year before. Examined by industry, real estate and business activities recorded also the highest numbers of enterprise closures, and by region relative to the enterprise stock the number of closures was highest in Uusimaa. Examined by legal form, there were one per cent fewer openings and 12 per cent more closures of enterprises in the corporate form of natural person and some two per cent more openings and a good 15 per cent more closures of enterprises of the corporate form of limited company than in the respective period of the previous year.
Enterprise openings, 3rd quarter of 2008
According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,667 enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2008. Enterprise openings decreased by 0.1 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2007 when they numbered 7,671. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.5 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2008.
The number of enterprise openings was the highest in real estate and business activities where they totalled 2,255, or 29.4 per cent of all enterprise openings in the third quarter. In construction, enterprise openings numbered 1,353 (17.6%) and in trade 1,253 (16.3%).
Examined by region and relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the Region of Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,622, or 2.9 per cent of the total enterprise stock.
Examined by municipality, Helsinki (1,360), Espoo (370), Tampere (332) and Turku (260) had the highest numbers of enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2008. Compared to the third quarter of 2007, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (87) and decreased most, by 39, in both Espoo and Tampere.

Enterprise closures, 2nd quarter of 2008
According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,355 enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2008. Compared to the last quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 12.7 per cent, as in the second quarter of 2007 they numbered 4,751. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.7 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2008.
The number of enterprise closures was highest in real estate and business activities, where they totalled 1,371 (25.6%). In trade, enterprise closures numbered 1,162 (21.7%) and in construction 844 (15.8%).
Examined by region, in the second quarter of 2008 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the Region of Uusimaa, where they totalled 1,693. Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise closures was the highest in the Region of Varsinais-Suomi (2.1%).
Examined by municipality, Helsinki (840), Espoo (266) and Turku (252) had the highest numbers of enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2008. Compared to the second quarter of 2007, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (94) and Turku (58) and decreased most in Oulu (35) and Lahti (22).
