Number of enterprise closures rose significantly

The number of enterprise openings fell by 17.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2009. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in Uusimaa. The number of enterprise closures rose significantly in the last quarter of 2008, by 17.6 per cent from the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, also the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, and by region relative to the enterprise stock in Uusimaa. Examined by legal form, there were 16 per cent more closures in the corporate form of natural person and as many as 24.5 per cent more closures of enterprises of the corporate form of limited company than in the respective period of the previous year. The revised standard industrial classification TOL 2008 has been adopted in these statistics.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 9,479 enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2009. Enterprise openings decreased by 17.5 per cent from the respective quarter of 2008 when they numbered 11,492. Enterprise openings accounted for 3.0 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2009.

The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,650, or 17.4 per cent of all enterprise openings in the first quarter. In professional, scientific and technical activities enterprise openings numbered 1,524 (16.0%) and in construction 1,135 (12.0%).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa, where they totalled 3,264. Examined by enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa and Central Ostrobothnia, 3.5 per cent in both.

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the first quarter of 2009 in Helsinki (1,710), Espoo (458), Tampere (399), Turku (338) and Vantaa (327). Compared to the first quarter of 2008, enterprise openings increased most in Ylöjärvi, Varkaus, Liperi and Kiuruvesi (9) and decreased most in Helsinki (-150).

Enterprise closures, 4th quarter of 2008

According to Statistics Finland, there were 11,085 enterprise closures in the last quarter of 2008. Compared to respective quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 17.6 per cent, as in the last quarter of 2007 they numbered 9,425. Enterprise closures accounted for 3.6 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2008.

The number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 2,252, or 20.3 per cent of all enterprise closures. In construction enterprise closures numbered 1,784 (16.1%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 1,624 (14.7%).

Examined by region, in the last quarter of 2008 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the Region of Uusimaa, where they totalled 4,213. Relative to the enterprise stock the number of enterprise closures was also highest in the region of Uusimaa (4.5%).

Examined by municipality, Helsinki (2,075), Espoo (679) and Vantaa (421) had the highest numbers of enterprise closures in the last quarter of 2008. Compared to the last quarter of 2007, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (714), Espoo (261) and Vantaa (109) and decreased most in Kouvola (-25).

In these statistics the revised classification will be in use from this publication onwards. Data by TOL 2008 have been added to database services. The new time series by TOL 2008 starts from the year 2005. Data by TOL 2002 will still be published for the year 2009. Data by to TOL 2002 will remain available on the home page of the statistics and in the database services.
