The number of enterprise openings started to decline in the second quarter of 2011
According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by good two per cent in the second quarter of 2011 from the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in construction and by region in Uusimaa. In the first quarter of 2011, the number of enterprise closures was up by 35.8 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade and by region in Uusimaa.
Enterprise openings, 2nd quarter of 2011
According to Statistics Finland, there were 8,220 enterprise openings in the second quarter of 2011. Enterprise openings decreased by 2.4 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2010, when they numbered 8,422. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.5 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2011.
The number of enterprise openings was highest in construction, where they numbered 1,496, or 18.2 per cent of all enterprise openings in the second quarter. In trade enterprise openings numbered 1,316 (16.0%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 1,228 (14.9%).
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the second quarter of 2011 in Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,801. Relative to the enterprise stock the number of enterprise openings was highest in South Karelia (2.9%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings in the second quarter of 2011 was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,600), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (601).
Examined by ELY centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment), the number of enterprise openings in the second quarter of 2011 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (2,801), followed by the ELY centre of Southwest Finland (768).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the second quarter of 2011 in Helsinki (1,389), followed by Espoo (381), Tampere (368), Turku (303) and Vantaa (252). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, enterprise openings increased most in Turku (42) and decreased most in Vantaa (-53).
Enterprise closures, 1st quarter of 2011
According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,479 enterprise closures in the first quarter of 2011. Compared to the first quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 35.8 per cent, as in the first quarter of 2010 they numbered 4,036. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.7 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2011.
The number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,058, or 19.3 per cent of all enterprise closures. In construction enterprise closures numbered 986 (18.0%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 733 (13.4%).
Examined by region, in the first quarter of 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (2,173). Uusimaa also had the most enterprise closures relative to the enterprise stock (2.0%).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,986), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (397).
Examined by ELY centre, the number of enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2011 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (2,137), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (492).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the first quarter of 2011 in Helsinki (1,000), followed by Espoo (282), Vantaa (261), Tampere (238) and Turku (178). Compared to the first quarter of 2010, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (362) and decreased most in Pori (-15).
