Number of new enterprises nearly two thousand lower

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by nearly 25 per cent in the third quarter of 2011 from the respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in trade and by region in Uusimaa. In the second quarter of 2011, the number of enterprise closures was up by 6.3 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,447 enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2011. Enterprise openings decreased by 24.8 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2010, when they numbered 7,240. Enterprise openings accounted for 1.7 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2011.

The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where they numbered 884, or 16.2 per cent of all enterprise openings in the third quarter. In construction enterprise openings numbered 880 (16.2%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 857 (15.7%).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the third quarter of 2011 in Uusimaa, where they totalled 1,840. Relative to the enterprise stock the number of enterprise openings was highest in the region of Pirkanmaa (1.9%).

Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2011 was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,712), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (435).

Examined by ELY centre (Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment), the number of enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2011 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (840), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (559).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the third quarter of 2011 in Helsinki (870), followed by Espoo (282), Tampere (260) and Turku (225). Compared to the third quarter of 2010, enterprise openings increased most in Lappeenranta (17) and decreased most in Helsinki (-380).

According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,709 enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2011. Compared to the second quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 6.3 per cent, as in the second quarter of 2010 they numbered 4,429. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2011.

The number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 868, or 18.4 per cent of all enterprise closures in the second quarter. In construction enterprise closures numbered 774 (16.4%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 627 (13.3%).

Examined by region, in the second quarter of 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (619). Päijät-Häme had the most enterprise closures relative to the enterprise stock (2.0%).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the second quarter of 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,475), followed by the sub-regional unit of Tampere (328).

Examined by ELY centre, the number of enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2011 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (1,619), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (409).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the second quarter of 2011 in Helsinki (690), followed by Espoo (221), Vantaa (210) and Tampere (198). Compared to the second quarter of 2010, enterprise closures increased most in Vantaa (60) and decreased most in Helsinki (-42).
