Number of enterprise openings turned to strong decline

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by 23 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2011 from the respective quarter of the year before. In the third quarter of 2011, the number of enterprise closures was 12.8 per cent higher than in the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, and by region in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 5,317 enterprise openings in the fourth quarter of 2011. Enterprise openings decreased by 23 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2010, when they numbered 6,907. Enterprise openings accounted for 1.6 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade at 946, or 17.8 per cent of all enterprise openings in the fourth quarter. In professional, scientific and technical activities enterprise openings numbered 821 (15.4%) and in construction 735 (13.8%).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the fourth quarter of 2011 in Uusimaa, where it was 1,929. The numbers of enterprise openings were next highest in Pirkanmaa (527) and Varsinais-Suomi (524). Relative to the enterprise stock the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (1.9%).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth of quarter 2011 the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,806), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (426) and Turku (337).

Examined by ELY Centre, in the fourth of quarter 2011 the number of enterprise openings was highest in the ELY Centre of Uusimaa (1,929), followed by the ELY Centres of Pirkanmaa (527) and Southwest Finland (524).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2011 in Helsinki (956), followed by Espoo (272), Tampere (261), Turku (197) and Vantaa (186). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, enterprise openings increased most in Mikkeli (13) and decreased most in Helsinki (-258).

Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2011 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 2,776 and those of the form of limited company 2,091. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 52.2 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 39.3 per cent of all enterprise openings.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,603 enterprise closures in the third quarter of 2011. Compared to the third quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 12.8 per cent, as in the third quarter of 2010 they numbered 4,080. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.4 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the third quarter of 2011.

The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade at 888, or 19.3 per cent of all enterprise closures in the third quarter. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 775 (16.8%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 619 (13.4%).

Examined by region, in the third quarter of 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (1,762). The numbers of enterprise closures were next highest in Pirkanmaa (390) and Varsinais-Suomi (383). Relative to the enterprise stock, Uusimaa had the highest number of enterprise closures (1.7%).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the third quarter of 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,651), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (307) and Turku (261).

Examined by ELY Centre, in the third of quarter 2011 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the ELY Centre of Uusimaa (1,762), followed by the ELY Centres of Pirkanmaa (390) and Southwest Finland (383).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the third quarter of 2011 in Helsinki (812), followed by Espoo (250), Vantaa (198), Tampere (191) and Turku (164). Compared to the third quarter of 2010, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (157) and decreased most in Jyväskylä (-25).

Examined by legal form, in the third quarter of 2011 enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 2,415 and those of the form of limited company 1,598. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 52.5 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 34.7 per cent of all enterprise closures.
