Number of enterprise openings turned to decline
According to Statistics Finland, enterprise openings turned to decline in 2011, as their number was nearly 2.5 per cent lower than in the previous year. Enterprise closures, in turn, began to rise as their number was 14 per cent higher than in 2010. Examined by industry, the numbers of enterprise openings and closures were highest in trade, and by region in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 32,417 enterprise openings in 2011. Enterprise openings accounted for 9.6 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in 2011. The number of enterprise openings decreased by 2.4 per cent from 2010. The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where it totalled 5,385, or 16.6 per cent of all enterprise openings in 2011.
There were 24,409 enterprise closures in 2011. Enterprise closures accounted for 7.0 per cent of the total stock of enterprises. The number of enterprise closures increased by 14 per cent from 2010. The number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, where it totalled 4,685, or 19.2 per cent of all enterprise closures in 2011.
Examined by region, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings and closures were recorded in 2011 in Uusimaa (11,439 and 8,767, respectively). Compared to 2010, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Varsinais-Suomi (69) and decreased most in Uusimaa (-518). The number of enterprise closures in-creased most in Uusimaa (1,513) and least in Kanta-Häme (10).
Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings and closures were recorded in 2011 in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (10,648 and 8,147, respectively). Relative to the enterprise stock, the numbers of both enterprise openings and closure were highest in the sub-regional unit of Oulu (11.3% and 8.3%, respectively).
Examined by ELY centre, the number of enterprise openings was highest in 2011 in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (11,439), followed by the ELY centre of Southwest Finland (3,163). The number of enterprise closures was high-est in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (8,767), followed by the ELY centres of Pirkanmaa (2,200) and Southwest Finland (2,021).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings and closures were recorded in 2011 in Helsinki (5,310 and 3,976, respectively). Compared to 2010, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Turku (59) and decreased most in Helsinki (-220). The number of enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (643) and decreased most in Hollola (-23).
Examined by legal form, during 2011 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 16,814 and those of the form of limited company 12,447. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 12,915 and those of the form of limited company 8,222.
These numbers include changes in enterprises resulting from, among other things, incorporations and mergers.
