Fewer new enterprises are being established


According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by 7.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2013 from the respective quarter of the year before. In the fourth quarter of 2012, the number of enterprise closures was 17.5 per cent higher than in the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities while the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade, and examined by region both enterprise openings and closures were highest in Uusimaa. According to preliminary data on the whole year, the number of enterprise openings decreased by 4.1 per cent and the number of enterprise closures increased by 3.6 per cent in 2012 compared with the previous year.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 9,211 enterprise openings in the first quarter of 2013. Enterprise openings decreased by 7.4 per cent from the first quarter of 2012, when they numbered 9,946. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.7 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2013.

Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities at 1,561, or 16.9 per cent of all enterprise openings in the first quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 1,463 (15.9%) and in construction 1,212 (13.2%). In trade, the number of enterprise openings decreased by most (-200) from the first quarter of 2012.

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the first quarter of 2013 in Uusimaa, where it was 3,308. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (917) and Varsinais-Suomi (819). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (3.0%). Compared to the first quarter of 2012 , the number of enterprise openings was highest in South Karelia (+6) and decreased most in Uusimaa (-208).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (3,129), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (751) and Turku (545). Compared to the first quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional units of Savonlinna and Tampere (+23) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (-162).

Examined by ELY Centre, in the first quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the ELY Centre of Uusimaa (3,308), followed by the ELY Centres of Pirkanmaa (917) and Varsinais-Suomi (819). Compared to the first quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in the area of the ELY centre of Central Finland (+5) and decreased most in the area of the ELY centre of Uusimaa (-208).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the first quarter of 2013 in Helsinki (1,664), followed by Espoo (489), Tampere (471), Vantaa (324) and Turku (306). Compared to the first quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in Kangasala (26), Lappeenranta (18) and Savonlinna (18), and decreased most in Helsinki (-70) and Turku (-61)

Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2013, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 4,702 and those of the form of limited company 3,667. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 51.0 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 39.8 per cent of all enterprise openings. Compared to the first quarter of 2012, examined by legal form, enterprise openings increased most in the form of limited company (+89) and decreased most in the form of natural person (-754).

According to Statistics Finland, there were 10,934 enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2012. The number of enterprise closures increased by 17.5 per cent compared to the fourth quarter of 2011 when 9,302 enterprises closed down. Enterprise closures accounted for 3.2 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 2,034, or 18.6 per cent of all enterprise closures in the fourth quarter. In professional, scientific and technical activities enterprise closures numbered 1,693 (15.5%) and in construction 1,621 (14.8%). The number of enterprise closures increased most in professional, scientific and technical activities (+327) compared to the fourth quarter in 2011.

Examined by region, in the fourth quarter of 2012 the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (3,909). The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Varsinais-Suomi (1,134) and Pirkanmaa (947). Relative to the enterprise stock, Åland had the most enterprise closures (4.0%). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (+765) and decreased most in Central Finland (-56).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the fourth quarter of 2012, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (3,630), followed by the sub-regional units of Turku (781) and Tampere (748). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (+713) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Jyväskylä (-30).

Examined by ELY centre, the number of enterprise closures in the fourth quarter of 2012 was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (3,909), followed by the ELY centre of Varsinais-Suomi (1,134). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in the area of the ELY centre of Uusimaa (+765) and decreased most in the area of the ELY centre of Central Finland (-56).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2012 in Helsinki (1,868), followed by Espoo (575), Turku (451) and Tampere (433). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (+420) and decreased most in Jyväskylä (-28).

Examined by legal form, in the fourth quarter of 2012, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 5,668 and those of the form of limited company 3,815. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 51.8 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 34.9 per cent of all enterprise closures. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2011, enterprise closures increased most in terms of legal form in the form of limited company (+1,033).
