Number of enterprise closures rose significantly

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings decreased by 9,1 per cent in the third quarter of 2014 from the respective quarter of the year before. In the second quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise closures was up by 28.5 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, enterprise openings were most numerous in professional, scientific and technical activities and enterprise closures were most numerous in trade. Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings and closures was highest in Uusimaa.

Enterprise openings, 3rd quarter of 2014

According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,166 enterprise openings in the third quarter of 2014. Enterprise openings decreased by 9,1 per cent from the third quarter of 2013, when they numbered 6,781. Enterprise openings accounted for 1.8 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2014.

Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities, where they numbered 968, or 15.7 per cent of all enterprise openings in the third quarter. In trade, enterprise openings numbered 919 (14.9%) and in construction 846 (13.7%).

Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the third quarter of 2014 in Uusimaa, where it was 2,324. The number of enterprise openings was next highest Pirkanmaa (586) and in Varsinais-Suomi (557). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.1%) and Kanta-Häme (2.1%). Compared to the third quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Kanta-Häme (45) and decreased most in Uusimaa (-225).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the third quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,153), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (478) and Turku (391). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Hämeenlinna sub-regional unit (2.4%). Compared to the third quarter of 2013, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Hämeenlinna (27) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (-246).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the third quarter of 2014 in Helsinki (1,195), followed by Espoo (338), Tampere (292), Vantaa (251) and Turku (241). Compared to the third quarter of 2013, enterprise openings increased most in Kokkola (17) and decreased most in Helsinki (-89).

Examined by legal form, in the third quarter of 2014, enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 2,958 and those of the form of limited company 2,635. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 48.0 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 42.7 per cent of all enterprise openings.

Enterprise closures, 2nd quarter 2014

According to Statistics Finland, there were 6,997 enterprise closures in the second quarter of 2014. Compared to the second quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 28.5 per cent, as in the first quarter of 2013 they numbered 5,447. Enterprise closures accounted for 2.1 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2014.

Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,321, or 18.9 per cent of all enterprise closures in the second quarter. In professional, scientific and technical activities, enterprise closures numbered 1 097 (16.2%) and in construction 1 075 (14.7%).

Examined by region, in the second quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (2,867). The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Varsinais-Suomi (605) and Pirkanmaa (584). Relative to the enterprise stock, Uusimaa had the most enterprise closures (2.1%). Compared to the first quarter of 2013, enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (837) and least in Kainuu (2).

Examined by sub-regional unit, in the second quarter of 2014, the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,734), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (479) and Turku (406). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2013, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (819) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Raasepori (-15).

Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the second quarter of 2014 in Helsinki (1,503), followed by Espoo (437), Tampere (312), Vantaa (287) and Turku (233). Compared to the second quarter of 2013, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (502) and decreased most in Kajaani (-16).

Examined by legal form, in the second quarter of 2014, enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 3,534 and those of the form of limited company 2,662. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 50.5 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 38.0 per cent of all enterprise closures.
