Number of enterprise openings did not decrease much in the second quarter of 2020 from the previous year

According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings fell by two per cent in April to June 2020 compared to the respective period in 2019. In January to March 2020, the number of enterprise closures was unchanged in relative terms compared to the year before.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 8,375 enterprise openings in April to June 2020. There were two per cent fewer enterprise openings than in the corresponding period of 2019. In June 2020, the number of enterprise openings even increased slightly from one year earlier.

Examined by main industry, most enterprise openings were recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities. The number of enterprise openings in this industry was 1,516. Second most enterprise openings were recorded in the industry of construction (1,151) and third most in trade (1,007). Compared to the second quarter of 2019, the number of enterprise openings decreased most in other service activities (-144) and in arts, entertainment and recreation activities (-133). There were 554 enterprise openings in other service activities and 383 in arts and entertainment.

Examined by region, most enterprise openings were recorded in Uusimaa, 3,264 enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (803) and Southwest Finland (695). In absolute numbers and relative terms, the number of enterprise openings increased most in the region of Lapland from one year ago. The number of enterprise openings was 266 in Lapland, which is 45, or one-fifth, more than one year earlier. Central Ostrobothnia lost most enterprise openings in relative terms, there the number of enterprise openings decreased by one quarter.

Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 3,093 enterprises. There were 661 enterprise openings in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 504 in the sub-regional unit of Turku. There were slightly fewer enterprise openings in the sub-regional units of Helsinki and Turku than in the second quarter of 2019 and a few per cent more openings in the sub-regional unit of Tampere. In all, the number of enterprise openings grew or remained unchanged in approximately every second sub-regional unit compared to the previous year.

Examined by municipality, the highest number of enterprise openings in the second quarter of 2020 was recorded in Helsinki, 1,628 enterprises. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Espoo (515), Tampere (408), Vantaa (380) and Turku (316).

Examined by legal form, in the second quarter of 2020 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 4,373 and those of the form of limited company 3,707. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 52 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 44 per cent of all enterprise openings.

Enterprise closures, 1st quarter 2020

According to Statistics Finland, there were 8,675 enterprise closures in January to March 2020. There were 40 per cent more enterprise closures than in the corresponding period in 2019, that is, in absolute numbers around two-and-a-half thousand enterprise closures more. In January to March 2019, the number of enterprise closures had also been around 40 per cent higher than in the corresponding period in 2018.

Examined by main industry, the number of enterprise closures was highest in professional, scientific and technical activities (1,581). The second most enterprise closures occurred in trade (1,217) and the third most in construction (893). However, the number of enterprise closures increased most in relative terms in education (91%), arts, entertainment and recreation activities (84%) and in other service activities (74%) compared to the first quarter of 2019.

Examined by region, most enterprise closures were recorded in Uusimaa, 3,376 enterprises. The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Pirkanmaa (807) and Southwest Finland (741). Compared to the first quarter of 2019, the number of enterprise closures increased in all regions: in relative terms most in Central Ostrobothnia and Kanta-Häme (around 80% in both) and in relative terms least in Ostrobothnia (8%).

Examined by sub-regional unit, the number of enterprise closures in the first quarter of 2020 was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, 3,183. There were 677 enterprise closures in the sub-regional unit of Tampere and 524 in the sub-regional unit of Turku. In the sub-regional unit of Helsinki, the number of enterprise closures grew by 40 per cent from one year back, in the sub-regional unit of Tampere by 52 per cent and in the sub-regional unit of Turku by 26 per cent. The number of enterprise closures decreased or remained unchanged compared to January to March 2019 in only nine of all 70 sub-regional units.

Examined by municipality, most enterprise closures were recorded in Helsinki, 1,715, in the first quarter of 2020. The number of enterprise closures was next highest in Espoo (508), Tampere (420), Vantaa (369), Turku (308) and Oulu (289). Compared to the first quarter of 2019, there were over five hundred more enterprise closures in Helsinki and in the other mentioned municipalities over one hundred more, except in Turku, where there were sixty more enterprise closures. However, the number of enterprise closures decreased or remained unchanged in one-third of all municipalities.

Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2020 enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 5,689 and those of the form of limited company 2,373. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 66 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 27 per cent of all enterprise closures.
