The number of one-person households went up by 17,000 in 2012

At the end of 2012, there were a total of 2,580,000 households in Finland, of which a majority (74 per cent) were small, one or two-person households. According to Statistics Finland the number of one-person households increased by 17,000 and that of two-person households by 9,000 from the previous year. The number of larger households with at least three persons decreased from 2011. A household-dwelling unit is formed by all persons living permanently at the same dwelling.

The growth in the number of one or two-person households is also reflected in the demand for new dwellings. Among new permanently occupied dwellings in blocks of flats completed in 2011 to 2012, 89 per cent were occupied by one or two-person households at the end of 2012. One or two-person households occupied 70 per cent of new terraced houses. By contrast, at least three persons usually live in new detached houses.
