The number of one-person households grew most in older age groups in 2015
According to Statistics Finland, there were 2.6 million household-dwelling units at the end of 2015. Of these, 42 per cent were one-person household-dwelling units. The number of one-person households grew by 14,000 and the number of other household-dwelling units by a few thousand household-dwelling units. The number of one-person households increased most among those aged 65 and over, by over 10,000 persons. Becoming widowed increases the number of persons living alone, especially in the older age groups. The number of persons living alone among those aged under 35 grew by around three thousand persons.
Number of people living alone in older and younger age groups in 1991 to 2015
Persons aged 65 or over living alone mainly live in blocks of flats. However, compared to other persons living alone, this age group contains most persons living in detached and semi-detached houses. Altogether, 28 per cent of persons aged 65 or over living alone lived in detached or semi-detached houses at the end of 2015, 16 per cent lived in terraced houses and 54 per cent in blocks of flats. Of all persons living alone, 62 per cent live in blocks of flats. Of persons aged under 35 living alone, 80 per cent live in blocks of flats. The statistics do not cover persons living in institutions.
