More open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2016 than one year earlier

According to the Job Vacancy Survey of Statistics Finland, there were 26,400 open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2016, which is 21 per cent more than one year earlier (21,900). The reference period of the data is 1 December. In the whole of 2016, there were 33,900 open job vacancies, on average, which is 17 per cent more than in the previous year (28,900).

In the last quarter of 2016 , in all, 21,600 or 82 per cent of the job vacancies were in establishments owned by private enterprises, while one year earlier the corresponding share was 71 per cent. The number of open job vacancies increased most in the major region of Western Finland (+3,200) from one year ago. Examined by the industry of the establishment, job vacancies increased most in the industry group of trade, transportation and storage, and accommodation and food service activities (+3,700).

In the last quarter of the year, 31 per cent of all job vacancies were fixed-term, which was six percentage points fewer than in the corresponding period of the year before. The share of part-time jobs in all open job vacancies was 20 per cent, or the same as one year earlier. Employers estimated that 50 per cent of the open job vacancies were hard-to-fill, while one year earlier, such posts made up 45 per cent of open vacancies. Construction establishments in particular had plenty of jobs considered hard to fill.

The number of open job vacancies can also be viewed on annual level as averages of the quarterly figures . Of the open job vacancies in 2016, on average, 80 per cent were in establishments owned by private enterprises, while the corresponding share in 2015 was 74 per cent. When examined by the industry of the establishment, the number of open job vacancies increased most in the industry group of trade, transportation and storage, and accommodation and food service activities (+2,500) year-on-year.

Examined on the annual level, the shares of fixed-term and part-time jobs of all open job vacancies remained more or less unchanged from the previous year. On average, 21 per cent of open job vacancies in 2016 were part-time and 43 per cent were fixed-term. Employers estimated that 40 per cent of the open job vacancies were hard-to-fill in 2016, while one year earlier, such posts made up 37 per cent of open vacancies.

Statistics Finland has been collecting data on open job vacancies quarterly since 2002. The inquiry is directed to persons responsible for recruitment in private and public sector establishments. The data provider can respond either using the web questionnaire or through a telephone interview. The data collection includes approximately 2,500 different establishments in every quarter. The statistics are based on Regulation (EC) No 453/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The objective is to produce up-to-date and comparable information about the number and structure of job openings on the labour markets of EU Member States.

The figures in the tables are rounded, for which reason the sums do not always amount to the totals.
