Prices of fossil fuels decreased in the third quarter

The port price of hard coal decreased by over six per cent in the third quarter. Prices of domestic fuels continued rising. According to Statistics Finland's data, the consumption of peat and forest chippings made a downturn in the third quarter. The prices of transport fuels and light fuel fell, which was partially caused by cheaper crude oil. The prices of the Nordic electricity exchange have been on the rise since March.

Fuel Prices in Heat Production

Nordic water reserves have been smaller than average so there has not been as much inexpensive hydro electricity available as seen last year. In the third quarter, the prices of the Nordic electricity exchange were tens of per cent higher than in the third quarter of 2012. The prices for users of electricity have climbed by a couple of per cent depending on the tariff category.

The price of milled peat used in heat production was 31 per cent higher in the third quarter of the year than one year earlier. The price of forest chippings rose by over eight per cent from one year before. The price of natural gas used in heat production decreased by around two per cent from 2012. Of transport fuels, the prices of diesel and petrol went down by some three to four per cent, as did the price of light fuel oil in the third quarter if 2013 compared to one year earlier.
