Changes in compilation of statistics on natural gas prices

In future, data on the prices of natural gas will be published broken down into distribution network and transmission network customers and classified according to the size of energy use. From 2021 onwards, the prices are based on Statistics Finland’s data collection directed to gas users.

Until 2019, gas prices were based on the tariffs for type consumers of the transmission network published by the Energy Authority, where energy consumption and the peak period of use were taken into account in addition to the size of energy use. The publication of the data ended when the Finnish natural gas market was deregulated in early 2020 as the Balticconnector gas pipeline became commercially available.

To produce the data Statistics Finland started a price collection directed to gas users to produce the statutory data that would be delivered to Eurostat. In future, the price data of natural gas in these statistics will be based on the results of this data collection. Price data are still the total price exclusive of taxes. From now on, natural gas price data will only be published according to the gross calorific value. The classification follows Eurostat's reporting. More detailed data are published on a monthly basis in Natural gas and biogas price statistics (in Finnish).
