Mass media market 2000 - 2004

In 2004 the value of the mass media market was around EUR 3.8 billion. Compared with the previous year, the market grew by around 4 per cent, i.e. clearly more than one year before. Relative to GDP, the share of mass media was 2.5 per cent.

From 2000 to 2004 the mass media market grew in nominal terms by 9 per cent, but real growth remained only at 3 per cent. The share of printed media fell by two percentage points and that of electronic media grew by the same amount.

Printed media is still the biggest mass media sector. Its total turnover was EUR 2.7 billion in 2004. Within printed media the market of free-distribution papers grew most in relative terms, by 6 per cent.
