General government debt grew by EUR 4.3 billion in the third quarter of 2011
In the third quarter of 2011, consolidated general government debt grew by EUR 4.3 billion and stood at EUR 89.4 billion at the end of September. From the respective quarter of the year before the debt grew by EUR 6.1 billion. Of the consolidated general government debt, EUR 79.2 billion was central government debt and EUR 10.1 billion local government debt.
Bond debts made up the majority of central government debt. During the third quarter, their volume rose by EUR 3.5 billion to a total of EUR 69.4 billion. In the third quarter, the unconsolidated gross debt of central government grew by EUR 5.6 billion and was EUR 82.9 billion at the end of the quarter.
The unconsolidated gross debt of local government, that is, municipalities and joint municipal boards, remained on level with the previous quarter. Local government debt mainly consists of long-term loans, the value of which stood at EUR 9.9 billion at the end of September.
General government debt by quarter describes general government’s debt to other sectors of the national economy and to the rest of the world, and its development is influenced by changes in unconsolidated debt and internal general government debts. Consolidated general government debt is derived by deducting debts between units recorded under general government from unconsolidated gross debt. For this reason general government debt is smaller than the combined debts of its sub-sectors.
