Inflation 1.0 per cent in August

The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland stood in August unchanged from July at 1.0 per cent.

Risen prices of fuel put consumer prices up most, or by 0.6 percentage points, in the year. Restaurant and hotel prices also went up from the year before. Likewise, inflation was put up by rent increases and risen costs of dwellings. The rise in consumer prices was curbed most by lower telephone charges and prices of entertainment electronics and home PCs, as well as reductions in interest rates.

From July to August, consumer prices went up by 0.3 per cent, largely because clothing sales were gradually coming to an end.

Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 50,000 prices on 492 commodities from 3,000 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.

Review of the Consumer Price Index at the turn of the year

The commodity basket and the weight structure of the Consumer Price Index will be reviewed to correspond with the structure of consumption in 2005. The first revised index, Consumer Price Index 2005=100, will be published for January 2006 on 17 February 2006.
