Inflation slowed down to 0.8 per cent in October
The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland slowed down to 0.8 per cent in October. In September it was 1.2 per cent. The slowing of inflation was primarily caused by lower prices of petrol and flights in October.
Although the price of petrol fell in October, liquid fuels were still so much more expensive compared with last year's October that it pushed up consumer prices by 0.6 percentage points over the year. Restaurant prices and rents also rose from the year before. Higher prices of dwellings and risen charges of cultural and leisure services also had an impact on inflation. The rise in consumer prices was curbed by lower telephone charges and fallen prices of vegetables, entertainment electronics, home computers and used cars, and the fall in interest rates.
From September to October, consumer prices fell by 0.1 per cent. The fall was mainly due to lower price of petrol.
Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 50,000 prices on 492 commodities from approximately 3,000 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.
