Inflation 1.9 per cent in August
The year-on-year change in consumer prices, i.e. inflation, calculated by Statistics Finland was in August the same as in July, 1.9 per cent.
Consumer prices were pushed up most in the year by higher prices of housing: dwelling prices, rents and housing loan interest rates went up. Higher prices of fuels and food also had an impact on inflation. Rise in consumer prices was curbed by lower prices of telephone call charges and entertainment electronics and data processing equipment from the year before.
From July to August, consumer prices rose by 0.4 per cent, which was principally due to the ending of clothes sales.
Each mid-month, Statistics Finland interviewers collect around 55,000 prices on 497 commodities from approximately 3,500 outlets for the Consumer Price Index. In addition, some 1,000 items of price data are gathered by centralised collection.
