Consumption of hard coal more than doubled in January to September

By the end of September, approximately 4.8 million tonnes (120,000 TJ) of hard coal had been consumed in the generation of electricity and heat. The consumption went up by 120 per cent from the previous year. The consumption was high because generation of hydro power and net imports of electricity remained well below previous year's levels in the early part of the year. At the same time the consumption of electricity grew and separate production at condensing power plants increased considerably.

Consumption of hard coal showed especially strong growth in the third quarter of the year, because consumption in last year's third quarter was very low. The consumption in this year's third quarter, 1.8 million tonnes, was higher than in any other third quarter of the year in the 2000s. However, throughout the first three quarters of the year, consumption of hard coal was 11 per cent below the record year of 2003.
