Employment in cultural industries weakened from 2010, even though employment in artistic and literary creation improved

According to Statistics Finland’s Labour Force Survey, employment has weakened in cultural industries from 2010 to the end of 2013 by approximately ten per cent. In 2013, the activities employed 112,000 people against around 124,480 in 2010. Creative, arts and entertainment activities form an exception as employment improved from 2010 by nearly 30 per cent and exceeded 20,000 people in 2013. By contrast, employment in advertising fell by over 25 per cent between 2010 and 2013

In the three year period from 2011 to the end of 2013, employment in cultural industries declined by around eight per cent.

Employed labour force in cultural industries in 2010 to 2013

In libraries, archives, museums and operation of historical sites and buildings, employment decreased from 2010 to 2013 by nearly 17 per cent, in publishing by around 15 per cent, and in other cultural industries by over 27 per cent.

Employment in cultural industries has weakened by around five per cent from 2012. Employment has weakened particularly clearly within a year in libraries, archives, museums and operation of historical sites and buildings. In 2012, these activities employed over 13,100 people but in 2013 only close on 10,000.

In the Labour Force Survey, a person is employed if he/she has during the survey week been in gainful employment for at least one hour against monetary pay or fringe benefits, or to make a profit, or has been temporarily absent from work. Employed persons can be employees, self-employed or unpaid workers in enterprises of a family member. The concepts and definitions used in the survey comply with the recommendations of the ILO, the International Labour Organisation of the UN, and the regulations of the European Union on official statistics. The current data content of the Labour Force Survey is based mainly on the EU Regulations concerning Labour Force Surveys (577/98, 2257/2003 and 430/2005).
