Retail trade sales fell by 5.8 per cent in February

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales fell by 5.8 per cent in February from February 2008. Sales volume fell by 7.8 per cent during the same time period. Daily consumer goods sales fell as well, by 1.8 per cent. The biggest part of the decrease in retail sales is explained by the leap year, which means that February 2009 had one trading day less than the year before.

In wholesale trade sales decreased by 13.8 per cent, reflecting the subdued development in manufacturing. Due to a decline in the domestic demand and transit exports of cars, motor vehicle sales contracted by 32.1 per cent from the year before. In total trade sales fell by 14.4 per cent in February.

In retail trade sales in January-February fell by 2.2 per cent. During the same time period, motor vehicle sales were 31.9 per cent and wholesale trade sales 16.5. per cent down on the year before. In total trade sales fell by 15.4 per cent in January-February.
