Retail trade sales grew by 2.1 per cent in December from one year ago
Retail trade sales increased by 2.1 per cent in December from December 2011. The volume of sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, went down by 1.4 per cent in retail trade over the same period. In daily consumer goods trade, sales grew by 2.6 per cent and in department store trade by 2.3 per cent year-on-year. In contrast, wholesale trade sales went down by 1.8 per cent and motor vehi-cle trade sales by 28.4 per cent from twelve months back. In total trade, sales decreased by 3.7 per cent in December.

For the whole year 2012, retail trade sales grew by 4.3 per cent and wholesale by 3.0 per cent from 2011. By contrast, motor vehicle sales fell by 6.4 per cent over the same period. The change in motor vehicle tax that entered into force on 1 April affected the development of motor vehicle sales in 2012. During the first half of 2012, sales in total trade grew by 5.8 per cent but during the second half of the year sales went down by 1.3 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2011. Thus the growth in sales in total trade for January-December was 2.1 per cent compared to the year before.
The indices of turnover will adopt base year 2010=100 from the January 2013 data. The data will be released for the first time with the new base year on 14 March 2013.
