Total trade sales fell by 0.8 per cent year-on-year in April

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales grew by 1.8 per cent in April from April 2013. In daily consumer goods trade, sales rose by 6.4 per cent, while sales in department store trade went down by 1.7 per cent from one year ago. Wholesale trade sales declined by 1.3 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 4.1 per cent from one year previously. Thus, in total trade, sales declined in April by 0.8 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year.

The increase in retail trade sales was partly also due to Easter being in April this year, while last year it was at the turn of March and April. The fact that Easter occurs in different months is in particular visible in the sales development of food during March and April.

In retail trade, the sales volume increased by 1.8 per cent from April 2013. In wholesale trade, the sales volume diminished by 0.2 per cent and in motor vehicle sales by 4.2 per cent. Thus, the sales volume contracted in total trade by 0.1 per cent in April from the year before. The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series.

Motor vehicle sales grew in January to April by 5.5 per cent year-on-year

Motor vehicle sales increased by 5.5 per cent in January to April, and retail trade sales by 0.1 per cent from the corresponding time period of the year before. By contrast, wholesale trade sales decreased by 1.6 per cent over the same period. In total trade, sales were 0.3 per cent lower in January to April 2014 than in the year before.
