Sales declined in all trade industries in August
According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales went down by 1.7 per cent in August from August 2013. In daily consumer goods trade, sales decreased by 0.2 per cent and in department store trade by 1.4 per cent from one year ago. Wholesale trade sales went down by 3.2 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 0.3 per cent from the previous year. Thus, sales declined in total trade by 2.4 per cent from August 2013.

In August, the sales volume in retail trade decreased by 1.8 per cent and in wholesale trade by 2.5 per cent from one year back. In motor vehicle trade, the sales volume went down by 0.6 per cent from the previous year. Thus, the sales volume contracted in total trade by 2.0 per cent in August from the year before. The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series.
Total trade sales fell in January to August by 0.6 per cent year-on-year
In the January to August period, sales contracted by 0.7 per cent in retail trade and by 1.2 per cent in wholesale trade from the respective period of the previous year. Sales in motor vehicle trade increased by 3.0 per cent from January to August 2013. Total trade sales went down by 0.6 per cent over the corresponding period.
