Sales increased in all sectors of trade in November

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales grew by 3.3 per cent in November from November 2015. The increase in retail trade sales was affected both by the development in daily consumer goods trade and in department store trade. In daily consumer goods trade, sales grew by 2.4 per cent and in department store trade by 4.5 per cent from one year ago. Over the same period, motor vehicle sales increased by 9.8 per cent and wholesale trade sales by 7.7 per cent. Sales increased in total trade by 6.5 per cent from November 2015.

Sales volume grew in total trade by 5.7 per cent in November from the year before

The volume of retail trade sales grew by 3.9 per cent in November from November 2015. In motor vehicle trade, the sales volume grew by 9.7 per cent year-on-year. The sales volume in wholesale trade, in turn, increased by 6.0 per cent in November. Thus, sales volume increased in total trade by 5.7 per cent compared with November 2015.

The volume index of sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the value index series.

Sales in retail trade grew by 0.8 per cent in January to November

Sales in total trade increased by 1.2 per cent in January to November from January to November 2015. In the corresponding period, motor vehicle sales went up by 9.3 per cent and retail trade sales by 0.8 per cent from one year previously. In turn, sales in wholesale trade decreased by 0.5 per cent in January to November from January to November 2015.

The reported annual changes in trade sales and sales volumes are not seasonally or trading day adjusted, which means that the effects of public holidays are not considered. The opening hours of retail shops were deregulated starting from 1 January 2016 after which some retail shops have extended their opening hours.
