Growth in wages and salaries sum stalled in March to May

The wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 0.1 per cent smaller in the past March to May period than in the corresponding period twelve months before. In May the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy fell by 1.3 per cent from the year before. In the March to May period of the previous year the wages and salaries sum still grew, by 8.4 per cent year-on-year.

The growth in the wages and salaries sum slowed down or the wages and salaries sum fell in nearly all main industries in the March to May period. Especially the 8.1 per cent fall in the wages and salaries sum in manufacturing slowed down the development of the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy. The wages and salaries sum fell also in financial intermediation (4.7%), construction (2.9%) and trade (0.2%). In other services growth in the wages and salaries sum slowed down clearly from the year before. The wages and salaries sum grew more favourably than in the year before only in the private educational services sector (8.0%).
