Wages and salaries sum fell by 1,0 per cent in 2009
The wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was one percentage point smaller in 2009 than in the year before when it grew by up to seven per cent. The growth in the wages and salaries sum slowed down at the beginning of 2009 and then turned negative during the second quarter of the year. In the last quarter of 2009 the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was two per cent lower than one year previously. In December alone the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy fell by 0,6 per cent.
The growth in the wages and salaries sum slowed down or turned negative in nearly all main industries in the October to December period. The development in the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was slowed down most strongly by falls in the wages and salaries sums in manufacturing (-9,8%) and construction (-4,4%). The wages and salaries sums also fell in trade and financial intermediation. The wages and salaries sum grew more favourably than in the year before only in the private educational services sector (7,1%).
