Wages and salaries sum fell by 4.4 per cent year-on-year in April to June
According to Statistics Finland’s data, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 4.4 per cent lower in the April to June period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In June, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy decreased by 2.9 per cent from the year before. One year previously, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 3.9 per cent. The exceptional situation caused by coronavirus had an effect on the development of the wages and salaries sum.

The wages and salaries sum grew only in financial intermediation (2.4%) in April to June. The wages and salaries sums decreased in other services (-9.0%), trade (-6.2%), private education (-5.3%), manufacturing (-6.0%), private health and social work (-4.5%) and construction (-1.9%) compared with the corresponding of the previous year.
Wages and salaries sum fell by 6.4 per cent in the private sector in April to June from one year back
The wages and salaries sum in the private sector was 6.4 per cent lower in April to June than twelve months earlier. The wages and salaries sum of the public sector was 1.8 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year previously. In June, the wages and salaries sum decreased by 5.7 per cent in the private sector and grew by 5.3 per cent in the public sector from one year earlier. In the April to June period one year ago, the wages and salaries sum grew by 4.3 per cent in the private sector and by 4.0 per cent in the public sector from the year before.

The wages and salaries sum refers to the sum total of the gross wages and salaries paid to employees without incentive stock options. The wages and salaries sum is influenced by changes in employment and in the earnings level of wage and salary earners.
