Wages and salaries sum grew by 5.9 per cent in November to January year-on-year

According to Statistics Finland, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 5.9 per cent greater in the November to January period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In January, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 7.3 per cent from the year before. One year previously in November to January, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 0.1 per cent.

The wages and salaries sum grew in November to January in all main industries. The growth in the wages and salaries sum was fastest in other services (9.5%), construction (5.6%), private education (5.6%) and private health and social work (5.3%). The wages and salaries sum grew more moderately in the industries of manufacturing (4.7 %), financial intermediation (4.7%) and trade (4.7%).

The wages and salaries sum in the private sector was 6.9 per cent greater in November to January compared to the previous year. The wages and salaries sum in the public sector was 3.7 per cent higher than in the corresponding period one year previously. In January, the wages and salaries sum in the private sector increased by 8.5 per cent and in the public sector by 4.5 per cent from one year earlier. In the November to January period one year ago, the wages and salaries sum fell by 0.8 per cent in the private sector and grew by 3.0 per cent in the public sector from the year before.

The wages and salaries sum refers to the sum total of the gross wages and salaries paid to employees without incentive stock options. The wages and salaries sum is influenced by changes in employment and in the earnings level of wage and salary earners.
