Volume of goods transported by lorries decreased in the second quarter of 2009
In the second quarter of 2009, the volume of goods transported by lorries in domestic road transport decreased by 23 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2008. Expressed in tonne-kilometres, the volume diminished by 25 per cent. These data derive from the statistics on domestic goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland. A total of 79 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the April to June period of 2009. The volume of transported soil materials was 36 million tonnes while that of other goods totalled 43 million tonnes. The total transport volume of lorries was 5,231 million tonne-kilometres.
In the January to June period of 2009, the total volume of goods transported by lorries was 146 million tonnes and the total transport volume of lorries was 11,123 million tonne-kilometres. The volume of goods diminished by 26 per cent and the transport volume of lorries by 21 per cent from the corresponding time period of the year before. Goods transport has decreased especially in the fields of manufacturing and construction. By contrast, transport has increased slightly in trade.
The data for the statistics on domestic goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
