Volume of goods transported by lorries increased in the third quarter of 2010
In the third quarter of 2010, the volume of goods transported by lorries in domestic road transport increased by 9 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2009. Expressed in tonne-kilometres, the volume increased by 3 per cent. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland. A total of 104 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the July to September period of 2010. The volume of transported soil materials was 49 million tonnes while that of other goods totalled 55 million tonnes. The total transport volume of lorries was 6,218 million tonne-kilometres.
Volume of goods transported by lorries by quarter of year
In the January to June period of 2010, the total volume of goods transported by lorries was 277 million tonnes and the total transport volume of lorries was 18,596 million tonne-kilometres. The volume of goods increased by 15 per cent and the transport volume of lorries by 8 per cent from the corresponding time period of the year before.
The data for the statistics on domestic goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
