Goods transported by lorries in domestic transport decreased in October to December 2011
In the fourth quarter of 2011, the volume of goods transported by lorries in domestic road transport decreased by 19 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2010. A total of 91 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the October to December period of 2011. Sixteen per cent less of soil materials and 22 per cent less of other materials were transported than in the October to December period of 2010.
These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland. The method of the statistics on goods transport by road was revised as of the beginning of 2011. The data concerning the years 2001 to 2010 have been recalculated using the new method and they are available in Finnish at: http://pxnet2.stat.fi/PXWeb/pxweb/fi/StatFin/StatFin__Lii__kttav/?tablelist=true. The data are not comparable with data published earlier.
Volume of goods transported by lorries by quarter of year
In the fourth quarter of 2011, the transport performance of lorries totalled 6,105 million tonne-kilometres, of which 433 million tonne-kilometres were in private transport and 5,672 million tonne-kilometres in professional transport. The transport performance decreased by 16 per cent from the corresponding period in 2010.
The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
