Transports of soil materials by lorries decreased, transports of other goods increased in April to June 2012

In the second quarter of 2012, the volume of goods transported by lorries in domestic road transport decreased by seven per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2011. A total of 76 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the April to June period of 2012. Twenty-three per cent less of soil materials and six per cent more of other materials were transported than in the April to June period of 2011. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

In the second quarter of 2012, the transport performance of lorries totalled 5,889 million tonne-kilometres, of which 367 million tonne-kilometres were in private transport and 5,523 million tonne-kilometres in professional transport. The transport performance decreased by six per cent from the corresponding period in 2011.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
