Volume of goods transported by lorries increased in the third quarter of 2012

In the third quarter of 2012, the volume of goods transported by lorries in domestic road transport increased by 10 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2011. A total of 81 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the July to September period of 2012. Three per cent more of soil materials and 16 per cent more of other materials were transported than in the July to September period of 2011. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

In the third quarter of 2012, the transport performance of lorries totalled 5,795 million tonne-kilometres, of which 460 million tonne-kilometres were in private transport and 5,335 million tonne-kilometres in professional transport. The transport volume increased by four per cent from the corresponding time period of 2011.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
