Volume of goods transported by lorries decreased in the third quarter of 2013
A total of 70 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries in the third quarter of 2013, which was 14 per cent less than in the corresponding quarter of 2012. The volume of transported soil materials decreased by seven per cent and the volume of transport for other goods went down by 19 per cent compared to the fourth quarter of 2012. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.
Volume of goods transported by lorries by quarter of year
The total transport volume of lorries amounted to 4.9 billion tonne-kilometres in the third quarter of 2013, which was 15 per cent less than in the corresponding quarter of one year before. Eighty-nine per cent of the transport volume was transported in professional transport and 11 per cent in private transport.
The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
