Volume of goods transported by lorries grew in the first quarter of 2018

A total of 66 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries in the first quarter of 2018, which was 14 per cent more than in the corresponding quarter in 2017. The volume of transported soil materials increased by 9 per cent and the volume of transport for other goods grew by 15 per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of the year before. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

The total transport volume of lorries amounted to 6.7 billion tonne-kilometres in the first quarter of 2018, which was 11 per cent more than in the corresponding quarter of one year before. Ninety-five per cent of the transport volume was transported in professional transport and five per cent in private transport.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
