Number of deaths went up slightly from the year before
In 2009, the number of deaths was 49,880, which is the highest figure in sixteen years. The number of deaths was 790 higher in 2009 than in 2008. The number of men’s deaths increased by 690 and that of women’s by 90. A higher number of women’s deaths was last recorded in 2003. If the war years are not taken into account, the number of men’s deaths was last higher than this in 1939.
Life expectancy of male and female children at age 0 in 1979–2009
Life expectancy went up fractionally for both of 0-year-old male and female children in 2009. The life expectancy of 0-year-olds indicates the number of years a person aged 0 would live provided that the rate of mortality remains unchanged. The increased life expectancy of 0-year-old male children proves that the grown number of deaths has been caused by a rise in the number of aged men and the ageing of the population rather than by a rise in the rate of mortality.
In 2009, the number of deaths of children during their first year of life was particularly low at 158. This was only one higher than a year earlier. The infant mortality figure for 2009 was the lowest during Finland’s independence. Infant mortality per 1,000 live births was 2.6.
